At just 20 years old, Jahseh Onfroy lived a life that most people twice his age couldn’t fathom. Raised by his grandmother in Lauderhill, Florida, the young man was popular in school, yet never really felt comfortable or that he was in the right place. He stabbed a child at just six years old and spent several years in a youth correctional facility. It was at this facility that the young man found a way to express the deep-rooted emotions causing him such immense trouble. He began writing music, expressing himself lyrically well for such a young age. He became popular on Soundcloud in 2013 and soon, XXXTentacion was born. XXX released his first album in 2017 and like any hungry young artist, a second followed in 2018. His second effort reached the number one spot on the Billboard Top 100 charts. His music reflected his hurt, his pain, and the challenges he faced both growing up impoverished in a rough neighborhood and in love, friendships, and life in general. He touched many of today’s youth with his hard-pounding beats and words of tender wisdom. Onfroy would tell anyone who asked he was troubled, depressed, and oftentimes ‘sad’ yet when he sang, it changed something inside of him. He came alive when he saw so many people touched and inspired by his songs; he had finally found his purpose.
He helped underprivileged children, started an organization for victims of domestic violence, and had so much talent and so many plans for his future. Sadly, he was senselessly murdered on June 18, 2018, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida as he and his entourage shopped for a motorcycle. The world was heartbroken at this tragic loss of a talented young man who certainly would have done great things if given the chance to grow and mature. This young man made such a huge impact on today’s youth and despite his less than stellar background, it was a positive inspiration. On June 17, 2018, the rapper recorded a video saying “If I’m gonna die or ever be a sacrifice, I want to make sure that my life made at least five million kids happy.” It is one of the last recordings the world has of XXX, and as eerily comforting as it is to say, he did just that. And today, justice has begun in this senseless murder as 22-year old Dedrick Devonshay Williams was arrested and charged in his death. He is being held in the Broward County Jail without bond, charged with first-degree murder in the death of Onfroy. Police seek two additional suspects in the murder.
